3 Days in Hanoi - The Sofitel Metropole - Shawn Walters Photography - Life and My Lens

I’ve been to dozens of big cities but never have I experienced a city like Hanoi. The constant whizzing of millions of scooters, trucks and cars. With crosswalks that are merely paint on the ground and red lights that seem to be a suggestion. It’s crazy, but so exciting and thrilling in a way that everyone should experience.

After exploring the city we were always happy to be back, safe and sound at the Metropole Hanoi.

It was our quiet retreat away from the hustle. We loved the outdoor courtyard separating the new modern wing from the historic wing from 1901.

Our room was very nice with a view overlooking the courtyard. They dropped off macaroons and chocolate every night which was an excellent surprise.

Breakfast every morning was included and was served buffet style. There was a large assortment of offerings including Western cuisine and also Vietnamese.

We did not eat any meals aside from breakfast, but we did make time to have a famous “egg coffee”, a Hanoi specialty in which a creamy soft, meringue-like egg white foam is perched on dense Vietnamese coffee. Even better is that it was invented by a bartender right at the Metropole. It was so good!

We spoke to several staff members throughout our stay and everyone was so polite and friendly. It was pretty fun hearing the Vietnamese staff greet guests by saying bonjour since it’s a French hotel. We also had no translation problems as all the staff spoke fluent English.

The location is fantastic. It’s right across from Hoan Kiem Lake, a gorgeous lake with a path around it and a great place to escape the bustling city. There are hundreds of restaurants and bars within walking distance of the hotel. And if you don’t want to walk, Uber is easily available.

We had a great stay at the Metropole, it was our quiet home away from home while in Hanoi.
